What Are Esper Cycles in NTE?

The Esper Cycle is Neverness to Everness's elemental reaction system — the engine that separates competitive teams from casual lineups. Every character in NTE carries one of six elements, and when two adjacent elements in the cycle are chained on the Esper Cycle Meter, a duo reaction fires. Layer two duo reactions onto the same enemy simultaneously, and a powerful trio reaction lands on top. Mastering this system is the single biggest damage multiplier available to players who want to clear challenging content faster and more consistently.

Unlike simple elemental systems in other games, NTE's Esper Cycle has depth at every level: the speed at which the meter fills (called Cycle Rate), the squad-wide passive bonuses each character brings even from the bench, and the specific amplifiers that each team member contributes to the reaction chain. Understanding all three layers is the key to building a reaction-first team that maximises output.

The Six Elements of the Esper Cycle

ChaosChaos
IncantationIncantation
PsychePsyche
CosmosCosmos
LakshanaLakshana
AnimaAnima

The six elements form a circular ring in this order: Cosmos → Anima → Incantation → Chaos → Psyche → Lakshana → Cosmos. Each element reacts with its two neighbours on the ring. Knowing this order lets you immediately see which characters can pair for a reaction without memorising every individual combination.

All Six Duo Reactions Explained

Blossom — Cosmos + Anima

Generates 1 Vita Bud near the target after triggering the Esper Cycle. Each Vita Bud blossoms into 5 Vita Pistils that fly toward targets within range, exploding every 2 seconds and dealing AoE damage. Up to 3 Vita Buds can exist simultaneously, making sustained Blossom teams extremely strong in multi-target content and long boss fights. Key amplifiers: Nanally (when on the team, Blossom generates 1 additional Vita Pistil per second up to 10), Mint, Hotori, and Jiuyuan all have passives that boost Blossom output. This reaction scales excellently with the number of amplifiers on the team.

Remora — Lakshana + Cosmos

The target enters the Remora debuff state for 5 seconds after the Esper Cycle triggers, slowing their movement and attack speed. The slowdown decays over time and reapplication has diminishing duration. While primarily a control reaction, Remora is the prerequisite for the powerful Charge trio reaction. Key amplifiers: Skia and Hathor have passives that enhance the Remora debuff magnitude and trigger bonus effects when enemies are under Remora. Running both maximises the control uptime and sets up consistent Charge trio windows.

Hexed — Anima + Incantation

Deals an additional instance of follow-up attack damage to the target equal to 20% of the Anima and Incantation damage taken within the last 12 seconds, triggered when the Esper Cycle fires. This is effectively a delayed damage amplifier that rewards running a sustained Anima + Incantation dual-element setup. The longer the fight and the more Anima/Incantation damage dealt before the reaction, the larger the Hexed burst. Currently no character has a specific passive that amplifies Hexed — it fires purely from the element pairing — making it a reliable but less synergised reaction compared to Blossom or Discord.

Nova — Chaos + Psyche

Inflicts the Nova status on the target for 5 seconds after the Esper Cycle triggers. When Nova expires, the target takes a large burst of Mental Damage. This delayed detonation makes Nova a strong single-target nuke in controlled burst windows. The key to Nova is timing: swap out or use actions that extend Nova's duration before it expires to coordinate the burst timing with your main DPS's peak damage window. Key amplifiers: Fadia and Haniel both have passives that enhance Nova, increasing either the detonation burst or extending the debuff window for better burst coordination.

Scorch — Incantation + Chaos

Inflicts the Scorch status on the target for 15 seconds, dealing damage over time (DoT) after the Esper Cycle triggers. Scorch is NTE's primary sustained DoT reaction and the foundation for the Discord trio reaction. Because it lasts 15 seconds, Scorch provides persistent damage even during character swaps and reload windows, making it one of the most team-friendly reactions for players who quickswap frequently. Key amplifiers: Baicang, Sakiri, and Adler all have passives that enhance Scorch DoT damage or extend its duration. Running two of these three in a Scorch-focused team significantly multiplies the DoT payoff.

Stain — Psyche + Lakshana

Increases the target's Psyche and Lakshana damage taken by 20% for 12 seconds after the Esper Cycle triggers. Stain is a defensive debuff reaction rather than a direct damage source — it multiplies the output of your entire team's Psyche and Lakshana damage for 12 seconds. Currently no character has a passive specifically amplifying Stain, but the flat 20% damage taken increase applies to every hit from compatible elements, making it quietly one of the highest-value reactions when running a Psyche or Lakshana main DPS.

Trio Reactions: The High-Payoff Finishers

Charge — Cosmos + Anima + Lakshana

Triggers when a target is simultaneously affected by both Blossom (Cosmos + Anima) and Remora (Lakshana + Cosmos). The Charge trio reaction grants the active character 10 additional Ultimate Energy whenever Vita Pistils hit targets under Remora. In sustained fights where Blossom fires continuously and Remora is maintained, this creates a near-permanent Ultimate Energy funnel that allows your active DPS to cycle Ultimates far faster than normal. Key amplifiers: Chiz and Edgar have passives that specifically amplify the Charge reaction, accelerating the Ultimate Energy gain further. Teams running Chiz as a Main DPS can build around this reaction to maintain almost constant Ultimate uptime in wave content.

Discord — Chaos + Psyche + Incantation

The most impactful trio reaction in the current meta. Discord triggers when a target is simultaneously affected by both Nova (Chaos + Psyche) and Scorch (Incantation + Chaos). When active, Discord deducts a percentage of the target's Break meter continuously, dramatically accelerating Break accumulation on tough enemies and bosses. Because Discord both deals damage through Nova's detonation and depletes Break, it is simultaneously the best DPS reaction and the best Break reaction in version 1.0. Key amplifiers: Lacrimosa and Daffodill have passives that amplify Discord's Break depletion rate and additional effects. Building a Discord team around both of them creates the fastest Break chain in the game.

How the Esper Cycle Meter Works

Every character has an Esper Cycle Meter that charges through combat actions. The meter gains charge from Basic Attacks, jumps significantly on Skill casts, and fills instantly on a successful parry (Critical Dodge). When full, the next eligible character in your squad whose element is adjacent to the current active character's element on the cycle ring becomes highlighted — swapping to them at this moment fires the reaction.

Cycle Rate is the hidden stat that controls how quickly the meter fills. Skills tagged with 100 Cycle Rate fill the gauge in a single cast, making characters with high-Cycle-Rate skills the reaction enablers of any team. When selecting which character occupies a given team slot, Cycle Rate often matters as much or more than raw damage numbers.

Esper Cycle Passives are unique to each character and enhance one specific reaction. The critical detail: these passives are squad-wide and remain active even when the character is off-field. This is why team composition depth matters beyond just the active four picks — all four squad members contribute their passive amplifiers to the reaction chain regardless of who is currently on field.

Building a Reaction-First Team

Nanally · Mint · Hotori · Jiuyuan — Best Blossom/Charge Team

NanallyS
CosmosNanally

The definitive Blossom reaction team. Nanally (Cosmos) and Mint or Jiuyuan (Anima) establish the Blossom duo. Hotori's Cosmos passive amplifies Blossom further. With three Blossom amplifiers on the squad simultaneously, the Vita Bud output per cycle becomes enormous. Add a Lakshana character as the fourth member to escalate into the Charge trio and fuel constant Ultimate spam for your Main DPS.

Baicang · Daffodill · Adler · Lacrimosa — Best Discord Team

LacrimosaS
ChaosLacrimosa

The most competitive Discord team available in version 1.0. Baicang (Incantation DPS) and Daffodill (Chaos Sub-DPS) establish both Scorch (Incantation + Chaos) and Nova (Chaos + Psyche with a Psyche enabler) reactions. Adler (Incantation) amplifies Scorch from the bench. Lacrimosa (Chaos) amplifies Discord's Break depletion, creating the fastest Break chain in any current team composition. This lineup excels against bosses with large Break meters and in timed content where rapid Break is the win condition.

Skia · Hathor · Nanally · Edgar — Charge + Remora Team

SkiaS
LakshanaSkia

A Remora into Charge-focused composition. Skia and Hathor both carry Remora amplifiers, keeping the movement-slow on enemies consistently. Nanally establishes the Blossom reaction to trigger Charge. Edgar on the bench provides the Charge amplification passive and serves as a healer. This team excels in multi-target content and wave-clear scenarios where the continuous Vita Pistil spam + Charge Ultimate Energy generation creates an overwhelming loop.
