Who Is Adler in NTE?

Adler is an Incantation-element A-Rank character in Neverness to Everness and the capable butler of the Eibon Antique Shop. He fills a unique dual role in the game's combat system: he provides DEF-scaling shields that protect the entire team, while simultaneously applying Incantation DoT (damage over time) that contributes to Scorch and Discord reactions. Adler is one of the most versatile support units available without spending Annulith on a limited banner, making him a cornerstone of multiple high-performing team archetypes in version 1.0.

While Adler's raw damage output is modest compared to dedicated DPS units, his team value comes from the combination of survivability, reaction enablement, and his Esper Cycle Passive — which amplifies the Scorch reaction (Incantation + Chaos), one of the most common DoT reactions in the current meta.

What Does Adler Do?

Adler's toolkit is designed around a simple but effective loop. On field, he generates shields through his Skill and Ultimate that scale with his DEF stat. Off field, his Esper Cycle Passive continues to amplify Scorch even while he sits in reserve. His Ultimate applies concentrated Incantation DoT stacks to a single target, which synergises well in single-target boss fights. The key insight for Adler players is that DEF is his primary stat investment — every point of DEF simultaneously makes his shields stronger and scales his passive DoT contributions.

Best Arcs for Adler

Adler — Incantation A-Rank Shield Support

When choosing Arcs for Adler, prioritise DEF amplification and shield enhancement over raw ATK bonuses. His DoT scales on standard damage formula, so some ATK does help, but DEF investment returns more value through both shield durability and passive scaling.

Umbrella — Best Overall Arc

Adler's strongest Arc is purpose-built around maximising his shield strength. Umbrella directly increases the magnitude of the shields Adler generates, which means the team spends less time at risk and Adler can focus on his support rotation without needing to re-cast shields frequently. This Arc is the clear first choice for any Adler player who wants to use him as a dedicated protector and reaction enabler. If you are running Adler as your primary defensive option, investing fully in Umbrella from the start is the correct priority.

The Good, The Bad, The Bitter — Strong Alternative

A solid S-Rank alternative that improves Adler's subsequent shielding after he takes damage. This Arc activates a conditional bonus that stacks shields on top of his base generation whenever he absorbs hits, making it particularly strong in content where Adler is frequently targeted or where enemies have AoE damage that hits the entire team. While slightly more conditional than Umbrella, this Arc can perform comparably or better in sustained multi-wave content.

A Time Will Come — Best A-Rank Option

Adler's reliable free-to-play Arc choice. It provides stable ATK and DEF bonuses that benefit both his shielding throughput and his DoT output without complex activation requirements. Recommended for players who have not yet accessed the S-Rank Arcs. A Time Will Come is a functional and worthwhile investment during the early and mid-game phases.

Best Cartridge for Adler

Kingdom's Guard is Adler's best Cartridge, designed specifically around his shielding role. It amplifies the DEF stat that his shields scale from, which directly multiplies the protection value of every shield cast in his rotation. This Cartridge is uniquely strong on Adler because it compounds the DEF investment made through Module sub-stats and Arc bonuses.

Crimson: Twin Butterflies is a good alternative that provides ATK scaling with additional conditional bonuses. This is the right choice if you want to lean into Adler's DoT output alongside his shielding utility, particularly useful in Scorch compositions where his DoT contribution matters for the Scorch reaction's overall damage.

How to Play Adler: Rotation Guide

Adler's rotation is straightforward and designed to minimise time on field while maximising off-field contribution. The core loop is:

  1. Swap to Adler when the team needs a shield refresh or when the Esper Cycle Meter is ready for an Incantation reaction chain.
  2. Cast Skill to generate the primary shield. This applies a DEF-scaled shield to the active character and refreshes Adler's Esper Cycle contribution.
  3. Use Ultimate on single targets to stack Incantation DoT — in solo boss encounters, the Ultimate stacks significantly more DoT than it does on multi-enemy pulls due to the lone opponent multiplier.
  4. Swap back to the main DPS after the shield and DoT are applied. Adler's off-field passive continues amplifying Scorch for the entire duration he sits in reserve.
  5. Re-enter when shields expire or when the Esper Cycle Meter signals the next reaction window.

Tip: Adler's Ultimate applies significantly more DoT stacks when the target is alone (lone opponent bonus). In multi-enemy content, use the Ultimate after clearing adds to maximise boss damage. In sustained Scorch teams, prioritise Ultimate usage on the primary boss target for maximum reaction payoff.

Best Team Compositions for Adler

Baicang · Daffodill · Adler · Sakiri — Scorch/Discord Team (Premium)

IncantationAdler

Adler's highest-performing lineup in version 1.0. Baicang serves as the Incantation Main DPS, generating consistent DoT pressure. Daffodill adds Chaos element to enable both the Nova duo reaction (Chaos + Psyche is not present here, but Daffodill's Chaos element completes the Scorch chain: Incantation + Chaos = Scorch). Adler provides shields and amplifies Scorch through his Esper Cycle Passive. Sakiri as the fourth slot adds Incantation pressure and control effects. Taking Haniel instead of Sakiri converts this into a full Discord trio team (Chaos + Psyche + Incantation), the highest-damage reaction chain in the game.

Nanally · Jiuyuan · Adler · Sakiri — Hexed Team

NanallyS
CosmosNanally

An alternative composition that leverages the Hexed duo reaction (Anima + Incantation). Nanally brings Cosmos element for Blossom reactions and her exceptional passive that amplifies Blossom follow-ups. Jiuyuan adds Anima element to trigger Hexed (Anima + Incantation) when combined with Adler's Incantation. Sakiri drives additional Incantation damage and control. This team produces reliable Hexed reactions and can escalate into the Charge trio reaction (Cosmos + Anima + Lakshana) with the right fourth member swap.

Should You Build Adler?

Adler is one of the best A-Rank characters in version 1.0 and a strong investment for any player, regardless of their gacha spending level. His free availability means every player has access to a Scorch-enabling Incantation support with meaningful shielding utility. In the early game, Adler covers both survivability and reaction enabling in a single unit, which no other freely available character does simultaneously.

His most significant limitation is that his damage output is noticeably lower than dedicated DPS units, and in teams that already have a strong Incantation DPS (like Baicang at high investment), Adler shifts into a pure support role. He does not independently deal competitive damage numbers in later game content. However, his team utility and reaction value remain strong throughout all of version 1.0.

Verdict: Build Adler if you need survivability and Scorch/Discord reaction support. He is the best free-to-play option for a defensive slot in Incantation teams and a reliable second choice in teams that run a primary Incantation carry.
